Labor Day is a celebration of the American worker. It is a day to pat each other on the back and say “job well done.” However, to most American it means a long weekend! It’s an extra day off to celebrate the end of summer, back to school and the start of football season. So for all the downtrodden, overworked and stressed out workers of Middle Tennessee, here is my top 10 list of events to help celebrate Labor Day in Nashville!


  1. INTER’NASH’IONAL FOOD CRAWL Celebrate Nashville’s rich diversity through food. Held on August 30, participants can taste international foods from ethic eateries along the Nolensville Road corridor. Tickets are only $10 a piece and can be picked up at Casa Azafran. So get your international on and eat up!
  2. Rewind BBQ Festival Head down to Riverfront Park in Downtown Nashville for the REWIND BarBQ Fest, held on August 31. This family friendly concert and festival provides some of the tastiest BBQ in the South while relaxing in the beautiful Tennessee sunlight and listening to good music from a variety of artists. Bring your blankets or chairs as you stretch out on the lawn. Food vendors from all over the South will be on hand so dig in!
  3. Frist Fridays Start the weekend off right with The Frist Center for the Visual Arts’ popular summer concert series: Frist Fridays. Join The Frist from 6 to 9 pm in the center’s Turner Courtyard and enjoy an evening of live music, light snacks and beverages. August 29features The Tyrone Smith Revue, a premier party band led by Tyrone “Super T” Smith. This group rocks audiences with their expansive set lists covering hits from classic rock to R&B and everything in between.
  4. Habitat Mud Run Don’t just stay in this Labor Day, get out and get dirty with the Habitat Mud Run! This 5K obstacle course is held on August 30from 10am-1 pm at Cane Creek Park in Cookeville, Tenn. and benefits the Putnam County Habitat for Humanity. So get up, get dressed and get your mud on!
  5. Clarksville Concert Series Join the Clarksville Convention and Visitor’s Bureau for two amazing performances. Beginning August 28, see John Carter Cash (the only child of Johnny and June) as he performs a salute show to his father celebrating the hits of Johnny Cash. Gain insight into what it was like to grow up in the Cash family and the impact it had on all of those who loved Johnny best.   6. Grape Stomp! We will! We will! Stomp Grapes! It’s time for the 15th Annual Grape Stomp Event, where you can get in the grapes and see what your feet and toes can do. Registration will start at 2:30 pm and the stomp will start at 3 and go until 6 pm. Not a grape stomping kind of person? Then just sit back and watch others do the work. It’s a great day on the lawn. All ages are welcome.
  7. Nashville Shore Fireworks! End the summer with a bang! Join Nashville Shores on Sunday, August 31 for a night of fireworks with the beautiful colors reflected on the lake. Fireworks start at dusk around 8:45 pm. Fireworks are included with a season pass or that day’s admission ticket.
  8. Franklin Jazz Festival Jazz it up this Labor Day at the Franklin Jazz Festival. This annual event will be located outdoors at the Historic Downtown Square on August 30 -31 and benefit the Williamson County Cultural Arts Commission. So come out and bring the whole family as it is surely to be the jazziest place in town.
  9. The Queen of Country Concert Join the Queen of Country, Loretta Lynn, at her ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. for a concert on August 30 from 8 pm to 11 pm. Tickets can be bought online or at the door.
  10. Zzzooofari Slumber Sleeping has never been so much fun. Head to the Nashville Zoo for a unique camping experience as you sleep under the stars just a short distance away from the snoozing animals. Enjoy a variety of activities that include hayrides, inflatables, an animal show, crafts, evening hot dog and marshmallow roast and a full breakfast in the morning. This is an event you certainly don’t want to snooze through!
