TN Media partners with Dickens of a Christmas

By admin

Franklin’s Dickens of a Christmas was born from a small idea back in 1984. At the time, city officials and local organizers were simply hoping to draw a few holiday shoppers to local merchants on and around Main Street.

Who could have imagined the success of that small idea 30 years later.

Set for Saturday, Dec. 13, and Sunday, Dec. 14, Dickens of a Christmas in downtown Franklin celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. It’s become THE holiday event of the season in Williamson County, and TN Media is proud to partner with The Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County as a sponsor of the festival.

Since that first Dickens of a Christmas, the event has grown from dressed up shopkeepers and a few costumed volunteers to Dickens characters filling the streets. At this year’s event, you’re sure to spot Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit, Mother Christmas and a host of other characters. You’ll also find street musicians, food vendors and great local shopping. And don’t forget the big finale on Sunday: the Town Sing. Everyone gathers on the square to light candles and sing carols as they make a procession to the First United Methodist Church.

Dickens volunteer Marty Ligon (aka Mother Christmas) as been coming back every year for 30 years. She recently shared with us the secret of the event’s success.

“It’s the people,” she says.

And not just the people who dress up, or the merchants, or the shoppers. It’s all of them. Together. The community. And that’s the type of community that TN Media is proud to partner with.

We hope you’ll mark your calendars for Dec. 13 & 14 and plan a little trip back in time to Victorian England — but you’ll only have to drive as far as Franklin.
